Knoxville Children’s Theatre will present a live stage play for children and families, adapted from Johanna Spyri’s classic novel Heidi, from July 12 through July 27.
The book has been a favorite of children for the past hundred years, and KCT’s new adaptation contains all of the comedic antics and dramatic episodes of the novel. KCT has re-located the play to Tennessee, with the Great Smoky Mountains substituting for The Alps, and Nashville standing-in for Frankfurt.
Orphaned at the age of two, Heidi is shuffled from home to home, until she eventually ends up in the log cabin of her Grandpa, high up in the Great Smoky Mountains. Gradually, the gruff old hermit warms up to having a child in the cabin and shares with her the glory of the Smokies. It seems Heidi has finally found a home, until her cruel Aunt Deedee arrives to whisk her away to the big city of Nashville!
Deedee is singing backup for “The King,” and Heidi finds herself being the paid companion of a sweet, young invalid girl, Clara Susskind. How Heidi brings everyone back to the mountain is an amazing journey, full of faith, hope, humor, and adventure.
