My family and I were invited to visit the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge last Saturday. We had visited on two other occasions, but each subsequent visit has offered new ways to experience the museum. Since it’s just a quick drive to Pigeon Forge, we often visit during the winter months when there are fewer tourists.
This most recent visit coincided with the Titanic Museum’s 2nd annual ice sculpting contest. This yearly event hosts artists from across the U.S. to Pigeon Forge to show off their ice carving skills to thousands of onlookers. My kids were amazed by the tools the artists used for carving, particularly the chain saws. We enjoyed walking around the exhibits and watching the artists work.
The highlight of the trip was the tour of the museum. New to my family was the audio tour options for kids
and adults. My six year old son LOVED this. He searched each room looking for the number to type into the audio device to listen. My husband and I thought that the audio tour was a fantastic addition to the museum tour. Throughout the tour, we learned about actual passengers aboard the ship that we had been assigned at the beginning of the tour.
The Titanic Museum is currently commemorating the 100th anniversary of the fateful voyage. A new exhibit featuring memorabilia from the 1997 Academy Award Winning movie, Titanic, featured costumes from the movie, including dresses and hats worn by Rose, as well as cast call sheets and movie props.
In the Memorial Room at the conclusion of the tour, we learned the fates of the passengers that we had each been assigned and learned that each of us had miraculously survived. We then placed rose petals in a large box that will be sent to be spread over the ocean where the Titanic sank on that fateful night, April 15th, 1912
